OB nurse Delora H.'s eyes filled with tears when she talked about her incredible experiences dealing firsthand with the miracle of life.
"It never ceases to amaze me how incredible birth is," she said. "It doesn't matter whether it was my first delivery or my most recent. It is always amazing." She talked about how she has helped many new moms deliver their first babies and how there was nobody there with them, so she became their birthing coach. "I felt honored to do this for them, really."
Delora H. decided at a young age that she wanted to become a nurse. As she matured, she knew that she wanted to marry and have a large family. She loved babies, and eventually had seven of her own. With this deep affection for infants and children, her thoughts became focused on becoming an OB nurse.
She studied in New York City and earned her degree in nursing. She married shortly after this and began to start her family while she was working at the local hospital. After her first two children, she decided to further her career and specialize in labor and delivery.
After she earned her degree, she was immediately accepted into the hospital's OB-GYN unit. She noted that most days were filled with excitement as each new baby was born, and each birth was unique and exciting in its own way. She also mentioned the joy of meeting so many moms and dads, many of whom were first-time parents.
After several years of working in the delivery room, Delora was asked to supervise the neonatal intensive care unit. She was thrilled with this new door that had opened in her career. She loved holding and rocking those infants who were starting life on shaky ground. As she cared for these ultra sensitive little lives, she taught their parents how to care for them as well. It was very rewarding to see a mom or a dad hold their baby so tenderly and confidently after witnessing their first attempts in taking care of their baby with awkwardness. Seeing each baby get well and go home healthy is a special blessing that she has witnessed countless times in her career.
"I have been living my dream career of being an OB-GYN nurse for many years now, and I am so thankful for each and every opportunity that I have been given. I wouldn't have changed a thing."
